Linnean House Book
SKU: 050936
Built in 1882, the Linnean House at the Missouri Botanical Garden is the oldest greenhouse in continuous operation West of the Mississippi River. Designed by architect George I. Barnett, it was originally an orangery built to overwinter citrus and other tender plants. Later the structure was converted to a warm conservatory to house the camellia collection. An historic renovation in 2010 preserved and imrpoved the camellia display, and added a rotating horticultural display of citrus in winter and rare and endangered plants in summer. The only greenhouse that dates the time of Garden founder Henry Shaw, the Linnean House was included in the U.S. Department of Interior's Historic American Buldings Survey.
