The Missouri Botanical Garden Climatron 50: A Celebration of 50 Years
SKU: 37521
Built in 1960, the Missouri Botanical Garden Climatron® conservatory celebrates 50 years in 2010. Named one of the most significant architectural achievements in U.S. history, the Climatron® was the first geodesic dome to be used as a greenhouse. The free-standing structure rises 70 feet in the center with no interior support, allowing generous light and space for the half-acre of tropical rain forest plants within—an increasing number of which are endangered in the wild. (For more information, visit www.climatron.org.)
In honor of the Climatron’s 50th anniversary, the Missouri Botanical Garden has published a beautiful full-color souvenir book. With an essay by Eric Mumford, professor of Washington University School of Architecture, and a foreword by Dr. Peter H. Raven, Garden president, the book will present rarely-before seen archival photographs and ephemera related to the plans and the people, the art, architecture, and engineering that went into this amazing structure. The book will also include gorgeous full-color contemporary photography of the structure today.
As an exciting new addition, Climatron 50: A Celebration of 50 Years will also include a special section of over a dozen 3-D photographs by famed 3-D photographer David E. Klutho. A pair of 3-D glasses will be included with the book!
